Year of Our Community Forests 2025
In 2025, Maui is focusing on enhancing its community forests, emphasizing the planting of native and culturally significant trees. This initiative is part of the "Year of Our Community Forests" campaign, officially proclaimed by Governor Josh Green on January 10, 2025.
The campaign encourages the planting of various native species, including:
-
ʻŌhiʻa Lehua: An endemic tree known for its vibrant red flowers and adaptability to different habitats.
-
Koa: A fast-growing acacia tree, valued for its hardwood and significance in Hawaiian culture.
-
ʻUlu (Breadfruit): A traditional staple in Hawaiian cuisine, symbolizing abundance and sustenance
