Meet Hawaiian 'Ulu, the Protein-Rich Tropical Superfruit

Breadfruit can be prepared in many ways and eaten at different stages of ripeness.
Our favorite is sliced thin and crisped in cooking oil in a pan on a fire pit by the sea. You can also roast pieces over the fire for a healthier option.

It can be eaten in the raw state or steamed and pounded into poi or added to desserts and drinks. It can be fried, baked, or made into a gluten-free flour. (1) In Hawaii, the traditional method of cooking is by roasting the fruit. It is also cooked in deep fire pits, called “imu.”

Breadfruit is delicious mashed or sautéed with garlic and oil. Some people also like to eat it mashed with coconut milk and baked in banana leaves. In Sri Lanka, it's often featured in coconut curries, and in Puerto Rico, it's traditionally eaten with salted fish.
